Strategically planned before the hot weather arrives!  The City of Duluth wants you to know they are working on the stairway that leads from the Lakewalk to the Portland Malt Shoppe on Superior Street. But don't worry, the malt shoppe will remain open and there are other ways to access the Lakewalk.

The repair work is starting today,  June 1, at 716 East Superior Street.  For about nine weeks they will have the stairs and a section of the Lakewalk closed for repair. They are going to be rehabilitating the steel support structure and concrete landings.

Last year, all of the concrete treads were replaced and temporary fixes were made so they wouldn't block public access.  But, additional work is needed if the stairs are expected to be safe for years to come.  They will be replacing the concrete landings with Ipe wood for greater longevity and easier maintenance. Adjusted railings, removal of corrosion, and new paint will also extend the life on this structure.

You will still have access to the Lakewalk Trail from either the Fitgers Complex or Leif Erikson Park and of course if you're like me, you'll always find a way to get to the malt shoppe!

The City thanks you for your patience during this project, it'll be great once it's finished!
