It's February 2, Groundhog Day.  The Lake Superior Zoo's porcupine, Spike will be playing the part of a groundhog today keeping the tradition of Groundhog Day alive in the Northland.  Do you remember the significance of Spike seeing his shadow?

If Spike sees his shadow we will have to endure six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't, we could see Spring and warmer weather soon.  (That's my vote!)  The reason Spike is doing the honors is that the Lake Superior Zoo doesn't have a groundhog. You could call Spike a distant relative since porcupines are members of  groundhog family.

Shadow watching on groundhog day has become a tradition at the Lake Superior Zoo and you are welcome to the festivities.  You'll find the Lake Superior Zoo at 7210 Fremont Street,  just off Grand Avenue in Duluth.  It will be a great learning experience, zoo staff will be talking about groundhogs and porcupines!  All the fun begins at 10a.
