In a season where finding high points is a challenge, perhaps Twins fans can rally and have Joe Mauer win the league-wide 2016 Roberto Clemente Award.

Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that Joe Mauer was named the Minnesota Twins 2016 nominee for the most prominent individual player award bestowed by Major League Baseball.

According to the Twins, the Roberto Clemente Award is the annual recognition of a player from each MLB Club who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

Today marks the fifteenth annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to officially acknowledge local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award.  As part of the league-wide celebration, the Roberto Clemente Day logo will appear on the bases and official dugout lineup cards and a special tribute video will be played in ballparks.

There will also be a special on-field ceremony before the start of tonight's game against Kansas City to honor Joe and his efforts within the community which include working with the Highland Friendship Club, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, the Mauer’s Minnies ticket program and more.

Also, beginning today, fans can participate in the process of selecting the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award on social media by posting voting hashtags to Twitter and Facebook.  Minnesota Twins fans can vote for Joe Mauer by using #VoteMauer.
