The National Weather Service has predicted the next phase of the snowstorm will result in at least 15 additional inches of snow in the area accompanied by strong winds and falling temperatures.  This is a dangerous storm and the City of Duluth advises no travel.

With over 30 inches of snow possible for our area, the City of Duluth would like to remind citizens of the policy related to snow and ice control as it affects the removal of snow from streets and sidewalks:

Keeping main thoroughfares and arterial streets passable is the highest priority. These are streets that provide access for emergency, fire, police, and medical vehicles as well as the Duluth Transit Authority. According to the City’s Snow & Ice Control Policy, these “Priority 1” streets should be open to traffic within 36 hours after the snowfall subsides.

Plow operators next begin snow removal operations on low volume residential streets. These “Priority 2” streets should be open to traffic within 48 hours after the end of a snow event.

Alleys are the lowest priority and are typically made passable within 56 hours after the snowfall subsides.

Property owners are responsible for removing snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours after the snowfall subsides.

You can help plow operators by:

  • Park in a garage or driveway if you have one
  • For on-street parking, adhere to the alternate side parking schedule.
  • Park at least 7 feet from driveways, 10 feet from fire hydrants, 20 feet from crosswalks, and 30 feet from stop signs.
