I Need Your Opinion, Should I Buy a Top Load or Front Load Washer and Dryer?

I have always bought my washer and dryer second hand.  The last pair I purchased has lasted almost 13 years and they are still working, just not that great.  I'm ready to take the leap and purchase a new pair, but don't know which kind to get.  Do you have an opinion?

Obviously, I'm familiar with the top load, that has always been available in my lifetime.   A pro with the top load is that my husband is very verse in diagnosing and fixing them if a problem should occur.  That's why our current beaters have lasted this long.

Like most people, we are adverse to change, however we're curious about the front load washer and dryers.  They look super cool, but I haven't heard many positive things about them.  In fact, I've heard mostly bad comments about them except from one person who has owned hers for several years and loves them.  She did say you have to be conscious to wipe out the soap drawer and the barrel on a regular basis to avoid gunk build up.

Seriously, if you have an opinion, good or bad, top load or front load, let me know.  We decided to buy based on the info we get from you, someone who already has life experience with them.  Thanks in advance!
