For months I've seen the free upgrade to Windows 10 box pop up on my computer.  I'm running Windows 7 on my laptop that I've had for a few years, and skipping ahead to Windows 10 sounds kind of enticing.  They say it's free, so what could be wrong with that?   Well for some people it may make sense, for others like me it doesn't.

From what I understand and have researched on the internet, Windows 7 was generally a pretty well liked operating system.  I like Windows 7, and it's worked well for me for the most part.   Windows 8 had some bad reviews and people didn't like it.   So from what I've found is that if you have Windows 8, it's a good idea to upgrade to Windows 10.  But, it gets a little more complicated if you've been happy with your Windows 7.

Eventually we will all have to upgrade down the road.  It's just the way things work.  Is anybody still running Windows 98 nowadays?  Maybe, but they aren't getting any new programs for it.   It's just the way technology and companies progress.

However, I'm not going to upgrade my laptop to Windows 10 for the following reasons.

  • My laptop is several years old.   I'm worried about compatibility issues
  • Nothing is ever free.   Microsoft wants to make money some how, and there are add ons that are a part of the upgrade and new products to try.
  • I've heard it's intrusive.  It wants to collect data from you for information.
  • I like Windows 7.
  • I don't want to have to back up all my files onto USB drives.  What I got works fine.

Now maybe I sound like a paranoid crazy outdated person, but it's just enough little reasons that I'm just going to skip the update.    In the next year I'll be buying a new laptop, and then I'll have to learn something new.  Whether it's finally switching to a mac or learning Windows 10, I'll cross that bridge when it comes.
