Registration for the June 22 running of Grandma's Marathon will remain open for an extra week. This extension now gives runners through Friday, June 7 to join the field for the event’s 37th running.

“With this year’s race falling a week later than typical, we thought it was appropriate to give marathoners some extra time to make their commitment to enter,” said Scott Keenan, executive director of Grandma’s Marathon. “This additional week hopefully will accommodate those currently on the fence.”

The last time Grandma’s Marathon occurred on a date later than this year was in 1990, when it was held June 23.

Online registration for the annual Two Harbors-to-Duluth race can be accessed by visiting www.GrandmasMarathon.com. The country’s 14th largest marathon currently has more than 7,100 signed up.

Grandma's Marathon weekend also features the 23rd annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and the 20th annual William A. Irvin 5K. The Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon is Saturday, June 22 at 6:45 a.m. and the William A. Irvin 5K is Friday, June 21 at 6 p.m. Registration for those two events is closed.

For the second consecutive year, Grandma’s Marathon weekend will also include the USA Men’s and Women’s Half Marathon Championships. The participants in this event are U.S. elite runners who will be racing for national titles as well as a share of the $82,000 purse. Last year’s winners were 2012 Olympians Abdi Abdirahman and former Duluthian Kara Goucher. The Half Marathon Championship men’s race will start at 6:15 a.m. with the women following at 6:25 a.m.

In all, more than 17,000 runners from around the world will participate in Grandma's Marathon weekend, which is presented by Wells Fargo and Toyota.
