Former Downtown Duluth Hotel To Become New Parking Garage

A downtown Duluth hotel isn't going to be around much longer.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, the former Carter Hotel will be coming down. The building is located at 17 N. Second Avenue East.

The Duluth Planning Commission gave the okay Tuesday night to turn the former staple into an 18-stall surface parking lot.

The soon-to-be parking lot is a go as long as the construction and take-down of the Carter Hotel doesn't damage the neighboring memorial, which is a tribute to three black men who were lynched there in the early 1900s. It was also asked that the north wall stay in tact as it serves as a backdrop for the memorial.

Project organizers, according to DNT, said they have confidence they can take down the hotel without damaging the memorial in any way.

The plan for the new lot comes at a time when parking is tighter than ever in the area. The Superior Street reconstruction project has been in full swing for months, making it harder to get around in and find parking in downtown Duluth. This would help alleviate parking stress.

As of now, the hotel is a public health risk because of water in the structure.

The parking structure might become something new in the future.
