Since news of Chris Cornell's death broke on Thursday morning (May 18), a plethora of artists from various genres have come forward to pay their respects and share tributes to the rock singer-songwriter. On Friday night (May 19), during a concert in Washington, DC, Eric Church added his name to that list with a cover of "Rusty Cage."

Readers can press play above to watch Church's "Rusty Cage" cover. Cornell's band Soundgarden originally released the song as a single from their Badmotorfinger album in 1992; Church's rendition, however, is in the style of Johnny Cash's 1996 cover of the song, which appears on the Man in Black's Unchained album.

“I started to get messages on my answering machine from people telling me how much they liked the lyrics [of “Rusty Cage”],” Cornell -- who also fronted the rock bands Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, and worked solo -- recalled to Rolling Stone of the response to Cash’s version of the song. “We put that song out five years earlier on Badmotorfinger, and nobody left me any messages. When you strip it down and Johnny Cash sings, you listen to what he’s saying. It’s a whole different angle.”

“Rusty Cage” won Cash the Grammy Awards Best Male Country Vocal Performance trophy. Unchained received the Best Country Album honor as well.

Cornell died following a sold-out Soundgarden concert at Detroit, Mich.’s Fox Theater on Wednesday night (May 17). The artist was found unresponsive on his hotel room's bathroom floor, with a band around his neck, and pronounced dead at the scene. His death has been ruled a suicide, but Cornell's wife says that she believes a prescription drug that Cornell was taking contributed to his death. Cornell's funeral is scheduled for Friday (May 26) in Los Angeles.

Church's concert in Washington, DC, was part of his 2017 Holdin' My Own Tour. The trek is scheduled to conclude on Saturday (May 27) in Nashville.
