Edmund Fitzgerald Sinks In Lake Superior November 10, 1975

So many stories over the years, about the day the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk. I think everyone knows the song better than the story. The song was actually inacurate. When I was a kid, it started my love affair of ships and knowing facts about them.

One story about the song that Gordon Lightfoot wrote about the ship. The original line says the hatches gave in and were leaking. There was a woman who wanted that line changed. Her son was the one watching the hatches, if they went and it was the hatches that were  blamed, her son was blamed. After the first dive, they were able to prove that the boat sunk another way, not with the hatches. So, Gordon Lightfoot changed the words to his song and re recorded it as a favor to this woman.
