Duluth / Superior Ice Fishing Report
Saturday was a beautiful day for ice fishing. With plenty of sun, and temperatures in the 20′s, anyone could have gone out in the ice and sat on a bucket. And judging by the crowds, a lot of people did. We heard the fishing was pretty good on the harbor off of park point, so that’s where we went.
We arrived at about 1:30 in the afternoon and walked out a few hundred yards. The coast guard cutter is still making a lane through the harbor, so we stayed of from the edge by quite a bit. Lots of people do set up near the water, but I’m not so brave. There was consistently 11 inches of ice, but it wasn’t great ice. We fished for about 2 hours and got only 2 bites, but nothing caught. Looking back, we should have stuck around for the night bite which I’m hearing now is from 4:30-5:30. Pretty short time period but good fishing.
Afterwords we headed over to Connor’s Point in Superior, where we heard the crappie fishing has been ok. Just about everyone else must have heard the same, because it was pretty crowded. We wanted a little less of a crowd so we went over to Loon’s foot landing, near the Nemadji river. There were about a half of dozen people fishing, and little luck it appeared. We even stayed through sunset but didn’t even get a nibble. First day skunked of the season!
We’re back at it today, and I’ll let you know if we find some fish!
