37 years ago today, the 1980 United States Men’s Hockey Team upset the Soviet Union in the semi-finals of the Olympics. How many members of that team have ties to Duluth and the surrounding area?

The 1980 ‘Miracle On Ice’ team’s legacy will forever be etched in history. On February 22nd, 1980, that team took down what was known as the greatest hockey team on the earth in the Soviet Union by a score of 4-3. The US team went on to beat Finland and claim the gold medal for the first time since 1960.

5 out of the 20 roster spots on the 1980 roster were filled by players who grew up around the Duluth area. Those included:

Bill Baker – Grand Rapids, Minnesota (University of Minnesota)

John Harrington – Virginia, Minnesota (University of Minnesota-Duluth)

Mark Pavelich – Eveleth, Minnesota (University of Minnesota-Duluth)

Buzz Schneider – Babbitt, Minnesota (University of Minnesota)

Phil Verchota – Duluth, Minnesota (University of Minnesota)

What’s more interesting is that three out of the five players were put on one single line.¬†Bulldog teammates Mark Pavelich and John Harrington were coupled with Buzz Schneider to make what is now known as the ‘Conehead’ line.

And then of course, the greatest sports announcing moment came from the famous game.
