Winter break for many children in the Northland is the week of February 18.  Have you planned family fun events with your kids?  I know, it's hard to find things the whole family can do AND afford.  The Duluth Public Library has taken care of the planning for you and will be hosting several different events for all ages all week long.  The best part?  They're all FREE!

The main library is located at 520 West Superior Street in Duluth, but many of the branch locations will also be participating in the week long fun, you're welcome at any location!

Tuesday, Feb. 19 – Branch Storytime – Mt. Royal Branch Library, 10:15 am,20 minutes of stories, songs and fingerplays for children from birth through age 5.

Tuesday, Feb. 19 – Diary of a Wimpy Kid program – Main Library Green Room, 2 – 5 pm, Kids in grades 3-8 are invited for Wimpy games, crafts, trivia, snacks, prizes and a showing of the movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Space limited to the first 50 kids.

Wednesday, Feb. 20 -- One-on-one ereader help – Mt. Royal Branch Library, 10 am – noon. Bring your ereader and your questions, and library staff will be on hand to help you download free library books to your Kindle, Nook or other device.

Wednesday, Feb. 20 – Baby and Toddler Time – Main Library Green Room, 10:15 am, 20 minutes of simple stories and fingerplays for infants and toddlers from birth to 36 months, with parents.

Wednesday, Feb. 20 – Storytime – Main Library Green Room, 11:15 am, 30 minutes of stories, songs and fingerplays for children ages 3-5. Parents are welcome but this may also be used as a first independent activity.

Wednesday, Feb. 20 – Movie for kids: Thunderstruck (rated PG) – Main Library Green Room, 2 pm

Wednesday, Feb. 20 – Movie for teens: The Amazing Spider-man (rated PG-13) – Main Library Gold Room, 2 pm

Thursday, Feb. 21 – Movie for kids: Balto (rated G) – Main Library Green Room, 2 pm

Thursday, Feb. 21 – Movie for teens: Pitch Perfect (rated PG-13) – Main Library Gold Room, 2 pm

Thursday, Feb. 21 – Pajama Storytime – Main Library Green Room, 6:30 pm, A half hour of cozy stories followed by a craft or activity, for kids from birth to age 8 and parents.

Thursday, Feb. 21 – DPL Book Club – Main Library Gold Room, 6:30 pm, Local author Danielle Sosin will join the book club’s discussion of her novel, The Long-shining Waters. Not an activity for children.

Friday, Feb. 22 – Branch Storytime – West Duluth Branch Library, 10:15 am

Friday, Feb. 22 – Ventriloquist James Wedgwood – Main Library Green Room, 10:30 am and repeated at 1 pm. Like a one-man variety show, James makes virtually everything talk, from wooden “associates,” to purses, bottles, and even unsuspecting audience members. A game show, singing without moving his lips and much more are all part of the fun.

Friday, Feb. 22 – “Riches to Ragtime” with Shannon Gunderson – West Duluth Branch Library/Evergreen Senior Center, 3 pm. Shannon Gunderson will take listeners on a musical journey from the early 1900s to the present, using ragtime jazz, blues, country, pop and more. All ages welcome. .

Saturday, Feb. 23 – Academy-award nominated films festival – Main Library Green Room

  • 11 am: Frankenweenie (rated PG)
  • 1 pm: Moonrise Kingdom (rated PG-13)
  • 3 pm: Argo (rated R)
