Flavored whiskys appear to be gaining in popularity, but would the new flavor from Crown Royal, a premium Canadian Whisky be a welcome addition to the trend?

First, I enjoy whiskey without any special flavor and Crown Royal is a favorite of mine.  As I walked into the liquor store I had no intention of buying Crown Royal Regal Apple, but something about that shiny green box told me to give it a try.

I thought that perhaps it would still taste very much like a whisky, but have a hint of apple.  Once I opened the bottle, I knew right away that I was wrong in that assumption.  The green apple smell is very strong, reminding me of a green Jolly Rancher candy.  I was very surprised by the strength of the apple smell, but would that translate to the taste?

I poured some into a glass and to took my first sip and was amazed at how strong the apple flavor was, almost too strong in my opinion.  There was a little hit of whisky afterward, but this is very much an apple product, as advertised.  I took another few sips and grew to appreciate it more, thinking of it more as a green apple novelty liquor rather than a whisky.

Apple lovers will enjoy the 70 proof Crown Royal Regal Apple more than traditional whisky drinkers.  It is good served neat or on the rocks.  I did try a drink mixing this with club soda and a splash of cranberry and that was pretty tasty too.

Overall, would I drink this again?  I would, but I'd have to be in the mood for it, and I might mix it with regular Crown Royal to soften the apple notes.  I also think it would be even more enjoyable in the summertime, on a nice warm day.  If you love the smell and taste of green apples, you should enjoy Crown Royal Regal Apple.

I'd be interested to hear what cocktails you come up with for it.  It did make me want to try Crown Royal Maple next, so I'll keep you posted.
