It’s one of those things that parents say “I never thought he/she could get to, or find it” when the unthinkable happens.  That’s why the Cloquet Police Department is thinking ahead and will provide 300 gun locks and free firearm safety kits through a partnership with Project Child Safe, the nationwide firearms safety education program. The safety kits, which include a gun lock, will be distributed at the Cloquet Police Department while supplies last.  Consider picking one up to insure your families safety.

Project Child Safe, a program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, has distributed more than 36 million firearm safety kits throughout the country since 2003. The program is supported by the firearms industry.

The Cloquet Police Department encourages Cloquet residents to pick up a project child safe safety kit so they can securely store their firearm. According to Cpl. Mark Laine,

“Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable style gun lock. The locks fit most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm in your home.”

By partnering with Project Child Safe, the Cloquet Police Department is” collaborating in a national effort to promote firearm safety education to all gun owners. Project Child Safe has distributed gunlock safety kits to all 50 states and 5 US territories.

In addition to handing out safety kits, Cpl. Laine plans to present two unique presentations, first McGruff the Crime Dog on gun safety for gradesK-6 at our local grade schools, and it is Your Call: playing it safe around guns, for grades 7-9 at the Cloquet middle school.

For questions regarding this, feel free to forward your questions through the Cloquet Police Department’s Facebook or Twitter accounts or contact Cpl. Mark Laine at the Cloquet Police Department at 879 1247.
