It seems like every week I'm warning you of another scam to watch out for, sad isn't it!  Thanks to the Cloquet Police Department we can avoid falling victim to the latest scam which involves you, your money and a fake check.  Here's how it works:

The scam uses a common tactic of sending the victim a check for more than the amount for some predetermined event or item. In this case that the Cloquet PD learned of, the victim was told they would be paid to display an Energy Drink advertisements on their car. They later received a fraudulent check for MORE than the price they were told they would be paid for advertising the product.   They were then told to send back the extra money. AHA!

The scam works when the victim cashes that check and sends the extra money back before they discover the check is fraudulent. I swear, I don't have a criminal mind, I would never have thought to "make" money this way!  Chances are, your bank will then hold you responsible for the amount of the original check and the fraudster makes off with your cash!

Let's be vigilant to fight the people who scam us.  Share this info with friends and family on social media or around the dinner table.  The more people that know about it, the less money they will steal!
