If you are a Duluth resident you probably received the same phishing scam letter I did from the City of Duluth.  I was most surprised at my own reaction to the letter.  It wasn't one of anger, disbelief or betrayal.  It was more of a shrug of my shoulders and the thought of "I give up.  The scammers, hackers, and evil heathens get me when I least expect it".  It just seems nothing is safe anymore and we've all just come to just accept it.

You know what I mean, shopping at a department store and your info is stolen.  Using your credit card at the gas pump and your info is stolen.  Out to a restaurant and your information is stolen.  That literally happened to my husband and the info wasn't stolen off the magnetic strip or electronically.  Our waiter took my husband's credit card in the back room and took pictures of the front and back with a cell phone, then made a $399.00 donation to a made up fundraising page using my husband's info.  Why $399.00?  Because if he got caught, it wouldn't be a felony if he kept it under $400.

Basically what has happened, according to the letter I received is that due to an online phishing scam a couple months ago, names, addresses and dates of birth of registered voters in the City of Duluth may have been obtained by an outside party.  But, our Social Security numbers weren't involved and I think the info they got is pretty much public knowledge anyhow.

Obviously the City is monitoring the situation but if you have questions you can call 218.730.4987.
