2013 Wisconsin Fishing Opener Was A Cold Icy One to Remember

Months ago me and some friends made plans to fish the Wisconsin fishing opener.   We kept the date open, got babysitters lined up, bought our licenses and eagerly waited to get back on the water.  However, it was apparent last week that we were going to have to change plans with the bizarre late spring we've had.

How Young Is Too Young For Your Kids To Handle Firearms? [POLL]

Tragedy struck the other day as a 5 year old boy shot his sister with his youth .22 rifle he got as a gift from his parents.  Long story short, his mother left the kids unattended for 3 minutes, and the 5 year old grabbed the .22 that still had a shell in it and fatally wounded his sister.  How terrible.  Right off the bat, multiple gun safety rules were broken, and this could have easily been avoided.  Nevertheless, it's a terrible tragedy and I can't imagine the pain that family is going through.

First, a Winter that Wouldn’t Quit, Now a Summer with Giant Mosquitoes

We've had a fairly decent weekend and now a couple of inches are expected tomorrow, UGH!  I know, I know, it's expected to melt fast, but I want 80 and humid!!!  With all this snow, I started to wonder if the extra moisture will mean more mosquitoes this summer, their eggs thrive in water.  But, even if we do have lots of the little buggers, at least we aren't dealing with the BIG mosquitoes they have in Florida!

Will Ice Be Off Lakes By Fishing Opener?

For the first time that I can remember, we are in actual danger of not having open lakes for fishing opener.  No one can say for sure, but we are definitely cutting it close if they do thaw out.  Local reports in the Northland have ice thickness anywhere from 2-3 feet.  That would be comparable to usually mid February thickness.

Entice Spring to Hurry to Duluth’s Lakewalk and Rose Garden with the “Raising of the Roses”

It's hard to believe in just months, we'll strolling through the beautiful Rose Garden in the City of Duluth near Lake Superior, without a jacket on, because as I write this blog, we are under a Winter Storm Warning, but it's true.  Of course, to reap the benefits of the garden's beauty, the hard work has to start now and you're help is needed.

Cook County Fishing Closures Will Protect Spawning Fish

Even if the announcement about the 2013 fishing season involves closures, it is nice to think ahead to warmer weather and the season getting underway.  The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wishes to inform anglers that there will be several fishing closures in Cook County during the beginning of the 2013 fishing season to protect concentrations of spawning walleye.

First Formal Lesson In Shooting Clay Pigeons [VIDEO]

Courage Center Duluth's Shoot for Fun is coming up on April 27th, and I will be participating in the B105 team.  Now, I've shot quite a bit of clay pigeons, but never on a league.  I've always been a pretty good shot, but I was self taught... So I thought maybe I'd watch a video on how to properly do it.   Here's lesson 1:

Walmart Now Selling Firewood For $3 A Bundle

I don't know why this is so shocking to me, but it is.  I was walking through Walmart in Superior the other day when I came near the sporting goods section and saw an end cap of an aisle with boxes of firewood.  On it, they said 'Premium Natural Firewood.'  $3.00 for .75 cubic feet.  Are people buying this?

Deadline to Remove Ice Houses This Weekend For Many Lakes

It's been warming up the last few days and the snow has been melting.  Also, the ice has been starting to get a little thinner.  This is normal for this time of year and the deadlines to remove ice shelters reflect that.  In Minnesota, if you're south of the Highway 2 line you'll need to have your ice house off the lake by Monday March 4th.
