Halloween is fast approaching. Besides figuring out exactly how much candy you'll need for the trick-or-treaters this year, another burning question remains: how will you dress for those adult parties and festivities? Halloween Movie Tip #6 – Watch My Favorite Horror Movie! It’s Directed By John Carpenter, And It’s Not ‘Halloween’ [VIDEO]

I was going to save this one for closer to Halloween, but there is a new prequel hitting the theaters this weekend that may tarnish the image of this franchise, if early reviews are any indication.  John Carpenter got his break directing the landmark horror film 'Halloween', but for my money his best movie and my favorite horror movie is 1982's 'The Thing'.  Forget the cliche' of a teen boys and girls getting chased by some evil killer.  This movie is just the opposite, in fact there are no teens and no female characters to be found.

Kurt Russell is the star of a talented ensemble cast that even includes Wilford Brimley dropping an 'F-bomb'!  They are all American scientists stationed in the middle of nowhere Antarctica who are stirred out of their normal routine by a nearby Norwegian camp hunting down a dog approaching the Americans.

Halloween Movie Tip #5 – Heeeeere’s Johnny! Watch Stanley Kubrick Take On Stephen King [VIDEO]

So, I'm  11 years old and my dad takes me, my sisters and a friend of mine to go see 'The Shining'.  My dad liked to take us to movies that were getting good reviews, regardless of the rating of these movies (I did enjoy 'Animal House' when I was 9).  Needless to say 'The Shining' was a freaky movie for me, but even as an adult I get the creeps whenever I watch it.  Jack Nicholson is brilliant as a man gone mad and then you have the images of the murdered twins, crazy dead naked lady, redrum, freaky costume people, etc.  What really does it for me is creepy music and the very end when you see the old picture from way back when and guess who is in it?  You can't let Halloween go by without revisiting The Overlook Hotel! Classic.

Halloween Movie Tip #4 – Watch What Happens When You Deny A Gypsy A Loan! [VIDEO]

I realize my first three scary movie recommendations were for older movies and I think that is for two reasons.  First, I saw those movies when I was young and easier to scare.  Second, it is hard to make a good creepy movie and I never got into the torture type movies that became so popular in recent years, like 'Hostel'

Halloween Movie Tip #3 – Watch Gregory Peck Spawn The Creepiest Kid This Side Of The Exorcist

As Halloween approaches you should mix in a creeping looking demonic kid into your viewing schedule and The Omen will work just fine.  Make sure you watch the original 1976 movie starring Gregory Peck, not the horrible 2006 remake (also keep in mind that as far as the sequels The Omen 2 is watchable but they get worse and worse from there)

Halloween Movie Tip #2 – Watch The Dr. Pepper Guy Turn Into A Werewolf!

This movie recommendation to get you in the mood for Halloween is a movie my dad brought me to when I was probably too young to see it and I thought it was fantastic then.  It's 'An American Werewolf In London'.  I recently watched it again and despite some special effects that look a little dated (although at least they aren't CGI!) it holds up pretty well.  The movie stars David Naughton, who at the time was best known for doing Dr. Pepper commercials, and Griffin Dunne. They are friends traveling through London when they end up in a place they were warned to avoid and then all the trouble begins.  An interesting thing about this movie is it was written and directed by John Landis, who at the time was best know for comedies like 'Animal House' and 'The Blues Brothers''.  Michael Jackson liked the effects in this movie so much he hired Landis to direct his full length video for 'Thriller'.  Enjoy and remember not to confuse this movie with the piece of crap 'American Werewolf In Paris' which was released years later.
