A recurring scam has been taking place on Craigslist for quite some time where people send in security deposits and pay rent up front for a property that isn't for rent.  People thinking that they have a great deal on a rental property are duped into mailing a check away, in promise of getting the keys at a later time.  The check is cashed and the keys never arrive, leaving them without their money and without the property.

Usually the scammers pick a property that is listed for sale from a real estate company, saying that they are no longer selling the house and the sign is just there for whatever reason.  They follow up with that they are out of town, so you can't see inside the house, but you are free to drive by.  There's even a basic application to fill out, asking for your personal information.

Never mail away money, or send money electronically with the promise of getting keys.

If their is a for rent, or for sale sign in the yard, call that number.

Sadly, these scammers know that when it comes to finding a place to live, people's emotions can get the best of them.   A lot of people think they've found a great place and don't want to lose it.  That's how these scammers win.
