Once again, there is a scam in the Northland because it's tax day.  It's hard to know what's true and who you can trust now days.  The best thing you can do is keep abreast of the scams that are current in the area and keep your guard up!  The latest scam has targeted the Pine County/Sturgeon Lake area.  Here's the latest:

It really is similar to other scams I've blogged about, like the ones that the IRS themselves warned us about.   The scammers call and falsely claim they are calling from the Treasury Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations; the Treasury Office of Legal Affairs or Emailing from the Office of the Secretary of The Treasury.

They'll tell you that you owe money and that if don't pay up during THAT phone call, someone will be sent to your home to arrest you.   You need to remember to be very careful when dealing with an individual claiming to be from a government agency and asking for money or personal information.  I know I would feel funny to deny the information their asking, but if they're reputable you should be able ask for time to verify the call before answering.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET A SCAMMER CALL:

  • If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue.
  • If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tigta.gov.
  • You can file a complaint using the FTC Complaint Assistant; choose “Other” and then “Imposter Scams.” If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.
