Cathy Kates

Hi y'all, thanks for checking out my bio! I grew up in the country community of Wrenshall, attended church in Carlton and worked in Cloquet. I adore and respect my family. My husband and I laugh and run together (well, I jog). My daughter is in her second year of college and keeps me young and our dog Bauer is an overactive Schnauzer. I love shoes, Asian food, and trying new recipes. My dream (at the moment) is to be on the Big Bang Theory or the Ellen Show. I have been in broadcasting for 16 years and thank you for your friendship and waking up to laugh with Ken, me and the Breakfast Club. ~Peace, Love & Hugs

City of Duluth Updates Parking Violation Fines for 2014

My co-host Ken and I just talked about the fact that my husband and I had gotten a parking ticket which HE forgot to pay.  We received a second notice, I got after him and it was paid immediately.  If you have one (or more) that you've been putting off paying, you may want to "git r' done" before the fine increases.

Cross Country Ski for Free During the National Winter Trails Day Celebration, Register NOW

I have down hill skied and in recent years learned to snow shoe (yes, there's a learning curve to that), but I have never been on a pair of cross country skis.  When we down hill ski one of my favorite things to do is "skate ski" from the bottom of the hill to the chair lift, so I think I would enjoy learning how to cross country ski and be able to take in the solitude of swooshing through the woods!  What to learn for free with me?

Get Healthy in 2014 With Taste of Home’s Kale & Bacon Salad with Honey-Horseradish Vinaigrette Recipe

Even if you didn't verbalize "getting healthy and exercising more" in 2014 as a New Year's resolution, I'll just bet it's in the back of your mind.  My resolution this year was "to take the time".  Stop procrastinating and take the time to do the things I need and want to get done.  Ken, my co-host asked what "things"?  IT could be anything!  From including more time with friends and family to finally cleaning the craft room.  But, one of my "things" is to also provide a healthier diet for my family and Taste of Home will be a big part of making that happen in 2014!

We’re Buying Our Metrodome Viking’s Season Ticket Chairs!

We have been Minnesota Viking's Season Ticket holders for 26 years.  Yes, they've had their ups and downs, but we were always excited to sit front row in an end zone at an NFL game.  Many friends and family members used our tickets when we couldn't go, so why not buy the chairs that we called "ours" for so many years.

UW Extension Provides FREE Classes in Climate Change Adaptations for Agriculture

Growing up in Wrenshall gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about agriculture through friends like the Laveau family.  Dairy, crops, livestock of all kinds and I loved having "chores".  I'm sure they thought I was nuts!  If you are a farmer, agriculture producer or involved in local agriculture business you may be interested in a presentation on agricultural adaptation for climate change in the northland.   It's free of charge and will give you valuable info to help in the success of your livelihood.

Interactive Piano Puts a Smile on Unsuspecting Travelers Faces in Grand Central Station [Cute Video]

I have to admit, self playing pianos have always sorta freaked me out.  Until I saw this video and watched the joy and wonderment that total strangers got out of a piano that could interact with them.  It will make you smile!

Chum Raises Awareness and Honors the Homeless in Our City with a Noon Vigil

It amazes me when I hear of the homeless in our area.  But, if you look close, they're there, wandering the city streets in tattered clothing, looking for warmth, a hearty meal and friendship.

Make a Super Easy, Super Cute DIY Gift Idea In Five Minutes: Candy Sleigh

My co-host Ken Hayes has a new baby girl in their household, Jane.  From experience, I know that most visitors to his home want to meet the new baby and hold her.  He also has a five year old and I was afraid he might be feeling left out.  Last night we went for a visit and I brought the materials needed for this easy DIY craft idea so just Zach and I could have some one-on-one time and he could make gifts for his teachers.

Revised Pet Licensing Rules Takes Effect in Duluth For 2014

As the holidays draw near, we begin to think about end-of-the-year tasks that need to be completed.  One thing we overlook is licensing our pets. I lived in the country most of my life, so moving to Duluth was a culture shock where pets are concerned.  My dogs are now on a leash in the yard for safety concerns, theirs and that of people passing by.  Now, I have to license my dog, something I never had to do before.  There is a new licensing structure in the City of Duluth you should be aware of.
