Alan Jackson’s Wife Cancer-Free and ‘Looking Good’

In 2010, Alan Jackson and his family received the news no one ever wants to hear. His wife, Denise Jackson, had been diagnosed with cancer. In an episode of GAC’s ‘Backstory’ last year, the ’Chattahoochee’ singer confessed what a difficult time it was for him to see his high school sweetheart suffering, saying, “To see her go through that, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. I’ve been taking care of her since she was 16, but I couldn’t do anything to help her. It was tough.”

Now, thankfully, Denise is cancer-free. Jackson opened up in an interview recently about how well his wife is doing and how much they’re enjoying their days now that they have a new perspective about them.

“She’s doing great,” Jackson told the Boot. “Of course, you have to get a scan every few months to check on everything, and it’s all been clear and looking good. She didn’t lose all her hair, but it did get pretty thin. She’s looking better now. She’s probably more healthy than she’s ever been now because she watches what she eats and does, and now she’s wearing me out! Everything’s looking good. I appreciate everybody’s prayers and concerns.”

The pair, who have admittedly dealt with the marital struggles that come from more than 30 years of marriage, continue to learn from each other, the singer says. ”I’ve been in this relationship I’m in for 30-something years now, and some days I wish I wasn’t married to her and most of the time I’m glad I am,” he shares. “I don’t care if it’s somebody that seems compatible or your soul mate … you have to work at it all the time. I always find that most times you treat strangers nicer than you do somebody that’s close to you, and if you learn to do that, that makes a big difference.”

In 2007, Denise’s book ‘It’s All About Him: Finding the Love of My Life’ became a best-seller, and now that she’s on the other side of such a health scare, it seems she’s thinking of writing another one — but Jackson’s not giving any details away.

“I can’t really speak for her, but she has felt like she wants to write something about what she just went through with this, because it’s such a tough experience,” he says. “She drew from her faith to help her get through that, and I think she feels strongly about trying to do something with that, eventually.”
