I'm sure people who don't read this blog will wonder if the city of Duluth neglected to pay their light bill when the Aerial Lift Bridge's lights go dark on Saturday.  Truth of the matter is there's a very good reason for it and the community will be joining millions around the world!

If you’ve never stopped to appreciate the beauty of our gorgeous bridge landmarks, you should. Not just the Aerial Lift Bridge, but the Richard I. Bong too. Not only during the day, but all lit up at night, it’s beautiful and I’m sure a delight for our tourists. However, to go globally green, we need to turn the lights off and that’s exactly what will happen during Earth Hour.

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative in partnership with WWF and Leo Burnett. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities are invited to turn out their lights for one hour to show their support for environmentally sustainable action.  Earth Hour began in one city in 2007 and has reached over 1.8 billion people in 135 countries across every continent, receiving reports as ‘the World’s largest campaign for the planet’.

The City of Duluth plans to participate in Earth Hour tomorrow, Saturday, March 28, starting at 8:30 p.m. For exactly one hour, the Lift Bridge lights will be turned off as a demonstration of our support and commitment for sustainable practices to protect our precious natural resources.

You can lend your support too!  The City encourages the community to participate in this grassroots worldwide event.
