The Minnesota Deer opener for firearms is less than a month away.  If you're like me, you've already been in the woods to scope out your spot.  You've probably already done some of the following things, too.

    Check Your Stand

If you have a permanent stand on private land, it's a good idea to make sure it's still all in one piece and sturdy.  This year I found my chair in my stand filled with water.  That would have been great to go out to a frozen seat on opening morning, right?

    Check Your Clothing

Yeah, this is the time of year where I try to dig out all of my Darn Tough merino wool socks.  Also, what did I do with that long underwear?

    Buy Any Replacement Gear Now

I like to go shopping the month before deer season for anything that I might need to replace.  You tend to spend a lot of money on that first weekend any.  You buy a license, beer, food, gas, etc just to get to deer camp.  If you buy your gear now, it won't hurt the pocketbook so much in November.

Also, what you're looking for might not be available when you need it.  This is especially true for ammo.  A lot of us have our favorite brand, and it's important to get that early!

    Got Wood?

Well, for our hunting shack, we burn wood in a stove.  So it's always important that we have dry wood ready to go.  It would seem like a no brainer, but one year we bought a new smaller, more efficient wood stove in September.   All of the wood we had cut that summer was too big to fit in the new stove.  That was a headache.

    Sight In Your Rifle!

Every year I take my deer rifle out and shoot a full magazine at the paper target.  You need to know for sure nothing got bumped or messed with since last season.
