Many people will argue that what I do isn't camping.  Ken made that painful obvious when he blogged the differences between his camping trip and mine entitled Tent Camping Versus RV Camping a few years back.  Whether you tent or have a camper it's always a fun time making memories with family and friends.  Since the hours I work don't allow for long road trips (and many of you are in the same boat) I thought I'd share a few of our favorite "not too far away" camping destinations and maybe you could give me some new ideas too.

    Burlington Bay Campground

I have camped at Burlington Bay on the north side of Two Harbors several times.  I officiate weddings and if I have a ceremony up the North Shore we try to combine work with pleasure and stay there.  One of the most memorable stays was when I was going to broadcast from Silver Bay Days, so we pulled to Burlington to camp and the B105 truck died and had to be towed.  Everyone in Two Harbors and Silver Bay were so kind and sympathetic!!!  You really can't beat the view of Lake Superior from Burlington Bay and there is great hiking and biking trails nearby.  Plus, kayaking if you are adventuresome.

    Grand Casino Hinckley RV Resort

Grand Casino's RV park truly does have a resort feel.  Now, I get crap camping here because there is blacktop and not a lot of trees, but there IS a pool, golf, casino, buffet, great country running or roller blading and access to the Munger Bike Trail.  We definitely stay busy.  If the weather is bad, you're allowed to use one of the two indoor hotel pools.  Pets are welcome and the other campers become friends, sometimes it's hard for us to fit in everything we like to do AND visit with our friends.  It's also closer to the cities to take in a Twins game or shop in North Branch.

U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Pokegama Dam Campground-Grand Rapids

The Pokegama Dam Campground is run by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and is a bit more primitive.  Some of the sites there are allowed to be reserve, but some of them are first come first serve.  They have a pavilion for families to use for gatherings and great fishing right near the dam on the Mississippi River.  You can fish for northern, bass or walleye.  We fished from the shore, but you can also bring your boat.  There are lots of hiking trails but if you're a runner, beware that the trails aren't groomed real well and you need to watch your footing to avoid tree roots and actual trees!  But, it is beautiful running under the canopy of mixed hardwoods and towering red pines.  The city of Grand Rapids is just a hop, skip and a jump away if you suddenly crave fast food or need to hit the local Wal-Mart, but otherwise, this campground is for a good book, quiet moments and private reflection (did I just type that?)

    Hayward KOA

THIS is a family campground that is sure to keep you busy!  At the Hayward KOA, there is tent camping, RV's and campers and even little cabins you can rent.  We have always enjoyed movie night, the ice cream social, mini golf, wagon rides, the pool complete with a 300 foot water slide AND tubing down the river!!  So, much fun!  What makes this camping experience the BEST is the quaint town of Hayward.  Fun little shops, restaurants, bars and very friendly people that make you feel welcome.  You can never go wrong with a KOA, they are award winning!
