The holidays are over but homeless shelters in the Northland are still in need of some essential items. Things get even trickier in winter, when temperatures can be deadly.

If you have some extra Christmas cash or have a New Year's resolution to give back to the community, this is the perfect way.

Homeless shelters don't need anything fancy - just a few cheap, simple items. A few items can go a long way.

I spoke to one local shelter who told me what items were needed most.

  • Single sleeping bags
  • Socks - men's are the most needed
  • Single DTA bus cards
  • Sugar
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Coffee
  • Creamer
  • Butter and/or margarine
  • Cereal - healthy types are preferred but all kinds are welcome
  • Ground beef
  • Toilet paper
  • Laundry detergent - large containers if possible
  • Dish detergent
  • Money - you can make donations directly to a shelter. A little goes a long way.

You can drop donations off right at the shelter of your choice. What a great way to give back to the community and start the year off right!
